No doubt about it, carp ain't pretty. They sound hollow when tossed on the bank. But they are strong fighters and when I first ate scored carp I gained a new respect for them.

Take a young kid. He wants to fish. You want to tell him that he doesn't have the money to fly to New England, buy waders and all the other stuff plus he can't lay out 70 feet of fly line on a cast to catch a 13" fish? Or are you gonna take him to the park with his Zebco and let him catch a 10 pound carp? Roots son, roots. Make it complicated later. I started going with my father and a colored man to a place where all of us could fish for $1.50. Caught bullheads and had a ball.

I've caught trout in Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Missouri, California, Illinois, Arkansas, Canada and Germany. I still look back on my days of carp and bullheads as fun. Last year I got into a school of 3/4 pound bullheads by accident and had more fun than I did catching my 170 pound striped marlin in Mexico.
