E, I confess I paraphrased with "incorrigible". I didn't look it up for the exact wording. I think it sums it up. Today a parent would sign over their child to juvenile hall instead and let the state worry about it.
<<My husband, who studies many things, and this subject for a book he is writing now, is interested to see what he calls "the great lie of Christianity" so graphically restated in your post, Bob. >>
I am always amazed at the lengths those that don't know God go to explain how unfair He is, and being "mythical" as it is claimed, how does God evoke so much feeling.
Well the great lie of Sam Furgeson, oh you said of christianity! I naturally saw the similarity with what Sam's rantings have been and what you posted. BTW, a very funny post to Emile from you. I really got a chuckle. It is scary what some say though, both christian and non-christian. Some truly long for the day all christians have been exterminated from the earth so they can be at peace. No tolerance there.
Jesus did not say much about homosexuality I think for the same reason He did not say much about murder. There was not any around to call his attention to it and everyone understood it was forbidden by the law. He said something about adultery because they shoved it in His face. He was most likely seeing divorce all the time and it's destructiveness in peoples lives.
It was always God's intention to reach out to all mankind with Jesus and His salvation. Abraham was not a Jew. He was picked by God because he believed in God, he has faith. Abraham was a member of the human race and he was given a promise by God that was before the Jews and was for the entire human race. That was that Abraham's descendants would be as the sands of the sea. That's a lot more than a hand full of Jews. The children of the promise are those that have the faith of Abraham, not those that descended from his flesh. Those that had the faith of Abraham by believing in Jesus. I am a descendant of Abraham. There is much more to this mystery but it's doubtful this much will be understood. Jesus was already there at Abraham's time. The nation Israel came after and was a vehicle for educating the people about there fallen state and there need for forgiveness. And through them educate the whole world. God raised up Israel to work through to reveal Himself to mankind.
Before your husband tries to write about Paul's writings he should consider this written by Peter concerning Pauls writing. Is your husband qualified? No disrespect intended but I don't think so. 2 Peter 3 15-16 "And regard the patience of our Lord to be salvation: just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort,as they do also the rest of the scriptures, to their own destruction."
Now Peter is saying this to christians who are having difficulty understanding Paul's writing. There is little hope that a non-christian untaught by the Holy Spirit would understand Paul's writings. Paul explained the reasons the law was made obsolete and it makes perfect sense as it should. Why continue to obtain forgiveness of sins for one year only from the sacrifice of animals and the spilling of their blood? That was what the law was about. Jesus made it possible to obtain forgiveness once for all time from His sacrifice and His blood shed for us. The law was imperfect and gave way to Jesus, the perfect way. The law prepared the way for the coming of Jesus. People recognized their sinful state and the need for forgiveness. The forgiveness provided by the law was limited and had to be repeated yearly. Jesus provided forgiveness for all time when He shed His blood at calvary. That is why Jesus fulfilled the law for all time. He is the law for us now in our hearts.
