LAS VEGAS -- Hewlett-Packard plans to implement biometric security features into its product line next year, company officials said here Monday at Comdex/Fall '98.
Scanners that identify and authenticate users via fingerprints will ship for use with HP's OmniBook laptop line by early 1999, said Stacey Wuste, marketing manager for OmniBook notebook PCs at HP, in Palo Alto, Calif. The technology will be offered as an accessory, first for mobile PCs and later for desktop systems, she said.
The company is also looking at other types of biometric security options, such as voice recognition and scanners that identify the iris of the eye, said Owen Snoey, HP's director of service and support.
"It's all the James Bond technologies," Snoey said.
The inclusion of biometric technology is part of HP's push toward increased security measures that began last month with the company's introduction of smart card technology.
Executives here in Las Vegas showed prototypes of smart card-based and biometric security features, including fingerprint scanners and a wireless smart card device that uses voice recognition to authenticate the user's identity. |
