I've got the 256/56 residential service. There is no minimum speed specified. This page describes their services:

gci.net

Note you can get more bandwidth, see business services.

As they use a 30 meg cable channel divided by 1000 max users, that's close to the 256/56. As they have less than 100 users, they're nowhere near the max. Any delays I've seen are due to slow servers at the other end & 12-24 hops. The connection from me to ISP has never shown any delay.

Each subscriber can have up to 8 computers sharing that 256/56 channel.

I'm using a program called "Net Medic" to monitor performance, it's freeware (works great!)

After comparing the cable modem to ISDN, ADSL, and DirectPC, it was an easy choice. If you can get one - just do it !
