Hi Brent, to be honest, my family, too, emulated the Cleaver family in the 1950's. My dad is cajun, but he did not want to act like a cajun until it became acceptable, even chic. He is a terrific cook, although I have never known him to wash a dish, in my whole life. My mom is a terrible cook. Luckily, both grandmothers were wonderful cooks, one even had a restaurant, so I grew up learning how to cook from my grandmothers.

The dichotomy between good food and expedient foot, IMHO, is a recent construct. The world is full of people who would never dream of serving their families a meal made up of chemicals, dried paste, miscellaneous organ parts, and so on. I like your concept of the kitchen being the center of the house, and I agree.
