As for Gore's comments, I just wonder what would have happened if APEC was held in the US and Mahatir is the keynote speaker.

I don't know what to make of Mr. Gore's comments either. The very first lesson branded into my brain by my (Malay) Malaysian wife was the injunction never to embarrass her in any way! I have become personally familiar with the unique Malay emotion that gave rise to the word "amok"!

Those rude remarks of the Vice President couldn't have been a mere mistake and it seems likely to me that a "good cop bad cop" scenario is playing out with the President on his way to Southeast Asia via Tokyo.

Let's see if Mr. Clinton can sweet talk Ms. Rafidah Aziz.

P.S. My wife, whom no one in Malaysia would mistake for a Texan, also on a recent trip home was called "boss" whenever she spent a lot of money. So it must have been either encouragement or acknowledgement of the magnitude of your monetary disbursements. <G>
