Given that even if MSFT is forced into this ridiculous strategy, OEM's will still be able to ship the current product for anything manufactured before mid-February of '99, which will make it possible to buy current windows systems well into March 99' I can't imagine it will affect the holiday season. I can imagine a rush of folks who want to use the current versions driving sales up in 1Q (which is typically slow), which would be a good thing for all the box makers.

Unfortunately for JAVA fans, this is a really bad move for the future of JAVA. HP has already created their own 'clean room' JAVA variant. This will further split the JAVA community as MSFT, HP and others will now be forced to create and market their own versions instead of the 'real' JAVA. It pretty much dooms the notion of an industry-controlled and widely accepted JAVA and turns it into another proprietary SUN product. Too bad - Scott McNealy has turned his personal feud against MSFT into a disaster for JAVA supporters.
