Texas Companies Give Southwest the Largest Gains in Revenues in Entire U.S.
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 1998-- Alpha Technologies Inc. and Texas Biotechnology Group Inc., both of Houston, Texas lead the list of 13 Texas-based companies with supercharged growth, according to the Fourth Annual Technology Fast 500 listing announced Tuesday by Deloitte & Touche LLP.

Ranking for the Fast 500 listing is based on percentage growth in revenue over a five-year period (1993 to 1997).

''The stratospheric growth of Alpha Technologies, Texas Biotechnology and eleven other fast-growing Texas-based companies gave the Southwest the largest gains in revenues among technology companies in the entire United States,'' said Mark A. Evans, managing director of Deloitte & Touche's High Technology Industry Group in San Jose.

''The Southwest showed an average 5,339 percent average jump in revenues, compared to average growth rates for the entire United States of 2,958 percent.

''The revenue growth of the Southwest is especially impressive in that only 21 companies on the Fast 500 are based in this region, compared to 175 companies based in the West,'' Evans added.

Ranked the 7th fastest growing technology company in the country, Alpha Technologies Group Inc. [Nasdaq:ATGI - news], a semiconductor and components company, showed a growth of 29,228 percent, growing from $258,000 in 1993 to $75,665,000 in 1997. Texas Biotechnology Corp. [AMEX:TXB - news], a biotechnology company, ranked Number 26 with a growth of 11,172 percent, growing from $150,000 in 1993 to $16,908,000 in 1997.

The Number One-ranked company on the Fast 500 for 1998 is Advanced Fibre Communications [Nasdaq:AFCI - news] Inc., a communications company in Petaluma, Calif., which showed a revenue growth increase of 43,103 percent. The company's revenues moved from $620,000 in 1993 to $267,858,000 in 1997.

Of all the Texas-based Fast 500 winners, only Polyphase Corp. [AMEX:PLY - news] appeared for three consecutive years (1996, 1997 and 1998). I2 Technologies [Nasdaq:ITWO - news] Inc. appeared for the second consecutive year (1997 and 1998). Two companies -- Texas Biotechnology Corp. and Vtel Corp [Nasdaq:VTEL - news]. -- appeared in two non-consecutive years (1996 and 1998).

Qualifying Criteria For the Fast 500

To qualify for the Fast 500, entrants must have had revenues of at least $50,000 in 1993 and at least $1,000,000 in 1997. They must be a U.S.-headquartered company developing and/or providing technology products or services.

The Fast 500 is compiled from three sources: winners of Deloitte & Touche's 1998 regional U.S. Fast 50 programs; nominations submitted directly to the Fast 500; and public company database research.
