Re: Advantage Learning Systems (ALSI)

In this weeks Forbes, Streetwalker, mention was made of ANSI as a potential short.

ALSI provides information systems to grades K-12, consisting of computer software and related training designed to improve students' academic performance by tracking their progress and increasing their skills. For the six months ended 6/98, revenues rose 35% to $22.3 million. Net income rose 32% to $4.2 million. Revenues reflect sales of Accelerated Reader and S.T.A.R to 3600 new schools. Earnings were partially offset by $475 thousand in purchased R&D costs

A few stats.

Rev. $50M
P/E 82
P/B 17
P/S 17
Shares Outstanding 16.9M
Float 2.8M Small float can be a problem when shorting
Cash Flow positive
Cash 32M

In my opinion, looks like a good company but substantially overvalued given the competition for school $, the number of companies Scholastic,The Learning Co.,Cendant, etc) that are competing in this area and the school decision making processes that generally do not ever favor a single company but rather let teachers and department heads make decisions regarding academic material.

Comments from anyone will be appreciated.
