Frank won't be back until the weekend, so I'll answer and he can add if he wants when he gets back.

The backbone is a half inch multiple stranded fiber optic cable(s) buried in protective pipes underground. The amount buried rises as you near a large city. Between cities there is only the long haul buried cables usually along railroad tracks. You could only see evidence of it where some is actually hanging on telephone poles. High wire represents way less that 1% pulled. There is also ocean buried cable between continents. It's no snap to see it either and there's nothing to see.
