Toy -
HP is pretty squeeky clean - one of the most ethical and conservative companies in high tech. They have developed a clean-room version of code that executes JAVA functionality without any IP and therefore owes nothing to anyone. MSFT could certainly use this variant to support their browser, both fulfilling the requirements of the suit and keeping customers happy.

But the problem runs deeper. Many in the JAVA community are unhappy with SUN's use of JAVA as a weapon - it has hurt JAVA acceptance and marginalized broader use of the technology. The right way to ensure viability would be to make JAVA an OSS development but SUN will not do that. The unfortunate result is the almost inevitable balkanization of JAVA.

As to Bearded One's strange statement about JAVA functionality in IE4 - it shows a real lack of understanding of the technology and legal issues involved - surprising from a usually careful poster. MSFT has a variety of ways to preserve compatibility with JAVA content that don't include any code from the JAVA tree. The real losers in this are people who care about JAVA - in that, MSFT will have achieved its goals whether they win or lose the suit.
