Normal people when put into a pressure-cooker situation, experience "fight or flight" syndrome, which is excoriating if prolonged, so try to avoid such pressure. The alternative, in my perception, is to build a shell. Not just presidents, and athletes, but anyone involved in constant ordeal, constant combat, e.g., cops. The shell is what causes the distortion, because it is a construct. I can't even imagine the pressure Clinton is under, yet he seems to keep coping. I admire him in spite of myself, now. I used to think he was spineless, but he clearly has inner strength. (Or maybe his doctors are shooting him up with serious drugs.) |
