HP Promises Clear Path To Merced

Hewlett-Packard is ensuring a clear path for customers to the IA-64 architecture it is co-developing with Intel, according to Lewis Platt, HP's CEO.
HP, Palo Alto, Calif., has in place two service programs to help its customers move easily to Merced, the processor being built with IA-64, Platt said Tuesday during a keynote address at HP World in San Diego, Calif.
One of those programs is HP's EPIC Readiness Services. EPIC stands for Exclusively Parallel Instruction Computing, an architecture HP developed for its PA-RISC chips.
And HP (company profile) has made available free on its website an IA-64 transition kit, he said.
Platt said HP is making sure Merced is backward-compatible with the HP products based on the EPIC architecture.
HP also plans to make available the "highest performance compilers" for software developers to modify existing third-party software to the IA-64 architecture, he said.
Platt pledged that PA-RISC-based systems will be shipped for several years after the introduction of the Merced chip.

HP On Target to Deliver Merced Processor-Based Workstations
Next-generation Systems to Provide Smooth Application-upgrade Path for Independent Software Vendors and Customers
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 14, 1998-- Hewlett-Packard Company today confirmed that it is on schedule to ship its HP VISUALIZE workstations and HP Kayak PC workstations based on Intel's Merced processor after Intel announces the processor's general availability.
HP workstations based on the IA-64 architecture will enable system-level binary compatibility with existing PA-RISC(1) and Windows NT(R)-based application software. This compatibility will permit independent software vendors (ISVs) and customers to seamlessly run existing software without modification. In such key markets as mechanical computer-aided design (MCAD), electronic design automation (EDA), financial services and software development, a smooth application transition means reduced time to market and greater cost savings.
HP is today meeting customer needs by offering a comprehensive workstation offering with UNIX(R) and NT system expertise, and industry-leading technical ISV support. The company believes that IA-64 is the platform for the future and intends to be a leader in this new architecture, with workstations that will offer performance beyond that of superscalar RISC and today's Windows NT architectures.
''HP's collaboration with Intel on the technology that underlies IA-64 architecture also has generated insight for the development of systems that will exploit its power,'' said Duane Zitzner, HP vice president and general manager of the Personal Systems Group. ''HP is clearly positioned to deliver next-generation workstations and software compatibility that will permit our customers to more quickly enjoy the benefits of the world's next epoch of processing power.''
''We see delivery of Merced-based workstations as another indication of HP's commitment to the long-term success of the IA-64 architecture,'' said Stephen L. Smith, vice president and general manager of the Santa Clara Processor Division, Intel Corporation. ''This is a big step toward taking computation and visualization to the highest performance levels, to satisfy the most demanding applications in both technical and commercial markets.''
