paul there are 2 competing technologies at Oracle - one is 8i as you mentioned and the other is an application server. We dont know who will win, but so far no applications (including Oracles own application suite) have signed up for 8i.

BTW I like the concept of 8i and Id like to see it succeed. I am not an msft disciple. But the problem I have is that this Java win, to me, is not a win for Sun in the enterprise where they need to succeed with unix against NT. And the fact that Sun people think its a tremendous win is a part of the problem. Companies like Apple and Sun occasionally have a nice hit, but as far as being able to deliver long term as a strategic partner in the enterprise they dont cut it. Thats what they need to fix, is my point. I can tell you that Sun is such a manufacturing pig that there is no way they will be competitive against Dell on any server Dell sells. Of course this leaves the high end for Sun, true, nobody says Dell will win there. But Sun had a 5 year lead in trying to figure out how to create a streamlined facility and cant deliver. Instead they are off creating whiz-bang technical gadgets like Java. Tell me why, as an enterprise architect I should buy a Sun server vs. Dell which is significantly cheaper due to mfg efficiencies... because of Java? Come on.

If Sun won a case against msft regarding something that mattered for their unix line against NT then I would feel completely differently. Anyway, I installed Quicken99 this weekend and got IE as an extra added bonus so Im not happy with msft practices either - but any business that links their future to Sun or Apple is making a huge mistake imo.
