"When we asked why not go ahead and allow people to take the loss in performance if they really, really wanted to, Tamasi explained that, given the loss in performance, 3dfx determined it was better to meet its schedule for Voodoo 3 and not risk breaking the core Voodoo pipeline. Voodoo 3 will use the same fundamental pipeline as Voodoo 1 and 2, and that architecture is not made for 32-bit rendering.
However, Tamasi explained that Voodoo 3 "is not the only bullet in our chamber," alluding to a totally new architecture down the road that will include every bit of high-end functionality users could hope for."
I think its clear that Voodoo 3 is Banshee 2, not the real Next Generation chip. Considering that its really B2, they outdid our highest original expectation for a B2 chip. This is great as long as they really have a nextgen chip with brand new architecture planned for sometime next year. |
