Charles,

To my knowledge the economy is still very sound. Can you say budget surplus after so many years of living in deficits? All indicators are still pointing to a healthy economy except for the dwindling confidence as the result of the Asian flu, Russian and Latin American problems. This is where the FED comes in by easing rates and assuring the financial markets that the support is there.

With Japan and many other countries in Asia coming out of recession things could only get better again in the months and years to come as far as this continent of the world is concerned. Meantime, the Brazilian crisis should be contained somewhat if not solved completely by the recently announced IMF bailout package. With those leading countries on the mend, the USA economy could only benefit.

Granted that the market may consolidate a little bit and go lower temporarily, 3-5% is probably in the offing, still have no doubts in my mind that the trend towards the end of the year and beyond is DEFINITELY UP. Actually, won't be surprised to see DOW 9200-9300 by January99 and to possibly 12,000 within the next 12-18 months. This time, this huge move will bring along small and medium size stocks to the party many of which are still way way below their 52 week highs. JMHO.
