Intel's market position is good fodder.

Everybody's got an opinion on Merced but consider the obvious - EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT THE MERCED. Do you know why?

Yes. For the same reason that everyone's talking about Win2000 or Oracle 8i today: you always talk the most about number one.

Think about that and you'll understand the importance of Merced and its follow on chips.

OK: Merced and follow-on successors are "important". But why will Intel necessarily maintain and extend its dominance? Business history is full of former number-ones. What makes Intel different?
