Well thanks to all for the thoughts on the subject. On the surface nearly all of the arguments clearly point out the potential advantages of bypassing an OS. The problem of course is that the database device needs to be updated for new hardware and options as they emerge. Not a trivial task... and certain to require significant R&D investment. Still one would be stupid to think we have exhausted innovation in the computer processing. I also think of the saying that goes more or less along the lines of those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Do we really want to go back to proprietary architectures? If we do... when do we draw the line? Not to imply ORCL would make the connectivity proprietary...
