Mike, as far as I'm concerned quidel's strep test has been the best for the past 2-3 years- we've tried most of them and this is the easiest to use and has the most readable endpoint( many test are difficult to interprete positive or negative) we sure use a lot of them- 3 practitioners where I work- I bet we go through 10-15 a day- lots of sorethroats- test is pretty cheap and you hate to miss a strep throat- potentially very serious complications but relatively easy to treat when found early. I'd guess the accuracy to be actually about 90% which is pretty standard for rapid strep tests-throat cultures are still the gold standard and often I will do both if in doubt. I've never really understood why this company hasn't taken off- perhaps as stated in this line Quidel is just recently gone independent- in office lab procedures are very important in this cost contolled environment and there is even evidence that Clia is loosening up a little- Quidel's products should be well positioned for high utilization as time goes by.
