Nortel Networks Continues Ownership of Layer 3 Switching Market

Report Names Nortel Networks Number One in Units and Revenue Share

SANTA CLARA, Ca., Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) today announced, through its Bay Networks line of business, continued worldwide leadership in the Layer 3 switching market, according to the latest study from market research firm The Dell'Oro Group. The CYQ3'98 report clearly states that Nortel Networks continues to hold number one positions in both revenue share and units shipped for the entire Layer 3 switch market. Nortel Networks has led the Layer 3 switch market since The Dell'Oro Group began tracking the market in the first quarter of CY'98.

The Bay Networks Accelar routing switches are installed in more network centers worldwide than any other Layer 3 switch product. Routing switches turbocharge campus networks with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of traditional Layer 2 switches plus wire-speed, low-latency IP and IPX routing.

The latest market numbers represent the company's continued delivery of proven enterprise Ethernet switching solutions that leverage the newest capabilities -- including advanced application support such as Quality of Service and Class of Service, multiple levels of redundancy and Enterprise-level network management -- to provide high-performance networks that support business-critical applications.

The Dell'Oro report also states that Bay Networks is continuing its Layer 3 leadership in both Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet switching with 29 percent and 41 percent revenue share respectively.
