Ann Coulter, author of "High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Case Against Bill Clinton," received an unusual letter Monday from Rep. John Conyers, the Michigan Democrat who is heading up the president's defense on the Judiciary Committee.
"I am writing this letter to ask that you provide the House Committee on the Judiciary with the documents described in the attached Schedule A," Mr. Conyers said in part.
Schedule A, as it turns out, is: "All documents, including but not limited to phone records, messages, or letters, that memorialize or relate to any contacts or communications between yourself and the following individuals or entities: a.) Office of Independent Counsel. b.) Any persons who worked or who now work for the Office of Independent Counsel. c.) Lucianne Goldberg. d.) Linda Tripp. e.) Paula Jones' attorneys. f.) Jerome Marcus. g.) George Conway. h.) Richard Porter. i.) Jim Moody."
Miss Coulter responded to Mr. Conyers in a letter yesterday:
"Thank you for your correspondence. I wish you the best success in your impeachment inquiry. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that your committee is looking into impeachment of the president. I do not believe you have authority to impeach a private citizen for expressing her First Amendment rights by writing a book critical of the president. For that reason, I have no intention of complying with your burdensome, irrelevant and harassing request that I produce, inter alia, phone records, e-mails and birthday cards exchanged with several of my friends and acquaintances since 1994. If it's any help, however, I believe that you should be able to obtain the same information from Terry Lenzner or another of the president's private investigators."
