Well, how about a little change of pace! For all of those of you who are snowed in, or have gusty cold winds and rain or hail pounding on your windows, I can tell you that I saw a little bit of spring coming I went for a drive with my family up the coast from San Francisco yesterday. The hills were a bright green, and newborn lambs were struggling to stand sturdily and run beside their mothers.
What a refreshing day! We stopped at a seafood restaurant at Bodega Bay, and I had cioppino (this is an Italian fish stew, for those of you who don't know), with plenty of local sourdough French bread, washed down with plenty of California red wine. The stew was full of Dungeness crab that had been caught off the dock at the restaurant, and was resplendent with fresh Tomales Bay oysters as well. Afterwards I bought local salmon that had been cured in a little smokehouse on the premises, and ate it last evening thinking about the sensual delights of the outing, bringing it all back.
I am sure there will be lots more winter here, in fact another Arctic storm is brewing and the temperature has dropped 20 degrees from this morning. Plenty of storms have been brewing in my own life lately, and there were parts of the day that were sad for me. But unless we can nurture ourselves to the extent it is possible at any given time, and gaining sustenance from these interludes, stay strong and keep on plodding ahead and growing at the same time, there is little hope.
I can hardly wait until spring is finally, definitively here, with the cherry blossoms blooming all over town, a million more new shades of green, bulbs sprouting up from the still cool earth in my backyard, and each day becoming a little longer, sunnier and warmer.
As Maurice Winn said, in a quote I really love and think about all the time, "We don't know where we're going, but we're on our way!"
Spring and hopefully more happiness ahead, everyone!! Try to enjoy the journey!!
