Sleeping with the enemy: Computer Reseller News, a trade newspaper for dealers and resellers (a k a the "channel"), regularly vilifies Dell Computer Corp. for cutting out dealers and selling PCs straight to customers. So it surprised its readers this week when it named Michael Dell as the year's most important computer industry executive. What gives?

Dell's success is forcing every competitor to "examine its processes, systems and strategies," acknowledges CRN Editor Robert Faletra. Yet, he conceded, "there are probably no two institutions in this industry that have historically viewed things more differently..." And Mr. Dell's reaction? He says he likes the honor but quibbles that the profile shows Dell's success still isn't well understood. "They talk about logistics as being the key but this is only a part of it," he says.
