I will look into this. I got my Oracle numbers directly from Oracle, but on the DB side of the house, they may have been extrapolating about the applications business. I also got the SAP numbers from SAP themselves, so I'm pretty confident about those numbers.

These are real sales numbers presented in early 1998. The trends had been a part of Oracle's thinking (and certainly of SAP's) although the actual penetration of NT was a little slower than the early predictions might have suggested.

BTW the trends also suggest that the market may stabilize at something like a 50-50 split on revenue and 70-30 split on units over the next few years between NT and Unix new installations. The difference between revenue and units is not just a pricing differential but reflects the fact that the Unix systems are typically larger configurations.
