Gangwal To Be CEO of US Airways
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - US Airways Group Inc. (NYSE:U - news) has promoted its president, Rakesh Gangwal, to chief executive officer of the airline holding company.
The US Airways board on Wednesday appointed Gangwal, 45, to succeed Stephen M. Wolf, who remains chairman of both the airline and the holding company.
The move comes after Gangwal's appointment as president in May, when Wolf asked the board to expand Gangwal's role.
Gangwal was viewed in the company as a major factor in the airline's success in negotiations with its pilot's union, a development that allowed the creation of MetroJet, US Airways' new low-fare carrier.
The appointment solidifies Gangwal's position as Wolf's logical successor.
Wolf, 57, said he will spend his time working on the strategic direction of the company. He was hired three years ago to reverse the company's financial troubles.
