To all the data services application posters...

A tap on the shoulder.

Many (if not all) the applications mentioned are have one thing
in common, small data size. These applications can be served
by a relatively low data rate, say less than 19200 kbps. You don't
even need TCP/IP. Browser access can be provided by UDP. A lot
of the other services can be provided by SMS. This saves a lot of
'code bloat'.

Back in 1993, CDPD was developed to offer data services on unused AMPS channels. (AMPS, by the way, always has some spare capacity).

Why isn't everyone today running around with CDPD devices?

The CDPD Forum had a number of major players - AT&T (i.e McCaw), GTE,
Hughes etc. Networks were rolled out (using basestations from Hughes and PCSI - now ADC). Terminals (modems, 'phones)were available from PCSI, Mitsubishi, Uniden et al.

What happened?
IMO - the billing schemes killed it. The Network providers really didn't know how to charge for services provided.

A lesson for QCOM and its partners perhaps?
