You are not missing anything. The more expensive options for the same month carry less premium with them. They are always the "better buy" (i.e., the stock doesn't have to go as high). But, because they cost you more, you have more to lose.

That's it in a very small nutshell. There is a lot more to the analysis of pricing options.
