>So that leaves consumer e-commerce. My guess: Yes, it will be a permanent niche.

I'm doing my X-mas shopping on the net. Bought 5 DVD's for <$90 total including freight. No sales tax, no fighting the crowds. Goods were delivered in 2 days. Bought from Best Buy on line because I trust their name and the prices were the best overall.

Also, bought several things from the Disney catalog for the same reasons. The freight offset the lack of sales tax.

I'm trying to buy Waterford Crystal on line, but I have a lot of experience with that. Again the price and availability is superior, but I'm buying from a Waterford specialist.

My point is that Yhoo and AMZN are going to have to compete with the mainstream stores who are going on the internet. I bought a VCR last year from a "electronics" specialist who had the best price.

It's proving to be very interesting and saving me $$$.

Now one thing I recently bought for my wife was Mikimoto Pearls. Those I had to see the real thing, no internet buying there.

You're right that the advertising revenues can't possibly support the current mania. I think the browsers will eventually make it easy to just type BestBuy.com and poof you go to their web site. If you electronic wallet is activated you won't even have to sign a paper.

Ultimately, I see the manufacturers as having the upper hand. Why not sell directly from the publisher and bypass ALL of the middlemen? Think about that one! All we need to know is what publisher is producing our favorite book. No different than knowing that Warner Brothers does the Lethal Weapon series.
