Craig,
I think MMX poses a long term threat to USRX if USRX's major profits comes from selling hardware based modems. It will also pose as a long term threat to ROckwell, Lucent, Cirrus Logic, TI, etc... which are either Modem IC suppliers or DSP IC supplier which selling into Modem DSP application markets.
I believe in the long term, 350MHz MMX will offer 33.6k , 56K modem with DSVD and so on on the host. But that w ill be about 3 years away. At this time, 160Mhz MMX barely can handle 33.6k, not much room for either DSVD nor 56K upgrade.
I also believe that USRX can develop something like a HSP based modem. The only questions USRX has to ask itself is the consequences on the revenue vs. profit margins.
Of course the software modem expertise lies in the hands of USRXs or Rockwells, not in the hands of Intels and Microsofts.
I hope this answers your question.
