Not an expert, but I have been reading alot and can give you the basics. There are many flavors of DSL. Each one has different positives and negatives. All of them are distance limited, the signal degrades and speeds go down beyond there limit and all need good lines from the CO to the house. ADSL is the one most here about and it has two main flavors, CAP and DMT. CAP can do up to 1.5 megs on the download side and I think 750 k upload. CAP is not the ANSI standard. I believe that when you read about the CPQ, MSFT and INTC's "ADSL Lite" endeavour they are talking CAP ADSL. DMT is the ANSI standard and the patents are owned by TI who got them when they bought a small tech company called Amati. DMT can do up to 8 megs on the download and 1.5 on the upload. All ADSL work over regular POTS, but are restricted by distance from the CO.

Cable does not have the distance restriction, but the connection to the internet is a shared connection. As long as you are the only one using it you can get 10 megs, but as more people in your area sign up for it, the performance will degrade. The company @home is in the business of replicating servers to help reduce this decrease in performance due to over use. As users increase they can create a server that is a cached copy of the entire internet. I have heard that 400 users per replicated server is the point at which performance begins to degrade significantly.

Cable companies also have to rip up there existing wires and lay down bi-directional cables for it to work. Most of the current cable infrastructure is one way to the house.

ADSL has been around for quite a while with a great deal of unrealized promise. I have heard that the rbocs are to blame and I have also heard that there are technical conflicts with ADSL and other services carried on the same wires that have slowed the deployment of this technology.
