<<I never think it's very fair to compare prices with Dell or Gateway>>

What about The Apple Store?

ok. How about Compaq--that seems a perfect compliment to Apple--mostly retail sales with a direct sell option.

So I went to their website and came up with the following configuration:

PII/400
64 mb RAM
8 gb hard drive
8 mb VRAM/graphics acceleration
56k modem
Zip drive
32x CD-ROM drive

Total: $1,470. Cheaper than Dell, even, and still has the larger hard drive, 56k modem, and more SGRAM.

BTW, Dell and Compaq both have wonderful, easy-to-use sites, more flexible although maybe not as easy as Apple's. Meanwhile, I have no idea how Gateway survives with a site as horrid as theirs.

Oh, and I don't want to get too down on Apple, here. I know that Apple has a way of taking turns leapfrogging and being leapfrogged by the Windows PC industry. I think, providing Apple doesn't blow it, that January may be their turn to take center stage and provide a bit more balance in their line-up.

Here's to hoping that with the Yosemite line we will say goodbye to processor speeds that start with the number 2.
