I don't think he's trying at all.
I think this is absolutely the dumbest move any of us could possibly make, and may in fact, be illegal, but that never seems to stop anybody, does it?
It flies in the face of all reason to think that anyone, other than Mr. Tow, will benefit. At the very least, can't it be said he's prone to odd behaviors like signing proxies to pseudonyms, and also, what about his silence even after the facts were clear about the gross exaggeration of 'asset' valuation? Some may not be, but I'm more than suspicious.
And now, do we really want to work with this guy? Do we really think he's, without any possibility otherwise, not a possible party to the scam?
Give me a break.
