Possible good news for December shorts: I checked with a friend who knows far more about this topic than I do, and the Amazon split will not "occur" until AROUND JAN 4. The date of record is Dec 18, but that is mainly a formality for insider and large institutional holders. You can buy the stock on Dec 31 and your shares will split around Jan 4 if you hold them. This means that the December options still will have a decent time premium, since the split doesn't occur until after expiration.. (unlike my first thought, which was that they were splitting on Dec 18, options expiration friday) To make it clear, you wont see (amazon price/3) until after January.
