Sales of U.S. Telecoms Gear Climb to $55.6 Billion in Q3

Posted November 11, 1998 12:00 PM PST

U.S. factory sales of telecommunications equipment rose to $55.6 billion at the close of the third
quarter of 1998 (YTD), an 11 percent increase over the same period in 1997, according to figures
released today by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA).

The year-to-date figure was powered by strong third-quarter results totaling $19 billion, a 14
percent increase over last year's third-quarter U.S. factory sales of telecom equipment.

TIA President Matthew J. Flanigan stated, "Strong September sales of telecom equipment 3/4 up 15
percent from 1997 3/4 bolstered the industry's growth, keeping it in healthy double digits. With new
orders also up 15 percent in September, it is clear that demand for communications products,
recognized as crucial to productivity, remains high."

The APEC MRA was initiated in Mexico City in March 1997. A final text of the arrangement was
achieved in Los Angeles in April 1998, while the document was unanimously endorsed by APEC
Telecom Ministers in Singapore and the Trade Ministers in Malaysia in June 1998. It will receive
final endorsement by the leaders in Kuala Lumpur in November 1998.
