This one might be off thread a bit but since we're on the subject of scams I'll post it.

True story. The other night I spoke with a family friend who is a former federal investigator in NYC. Back in the 60's his unit attempted to prosecute a fellow for placing an ad in the NY Times that read "Today is the last day to send in your $5" and listed a PO box number. Twenty thousand people responded to the ad netting this guy $100K.

When our friend questioned this fellow he asked him why the ad stated that it was the last day. He only had enough money for one ad was the response.

In the end they could not prosecute this guy because it was not illegal at the time (it is now). Legally the con artist claimed the money was a gift and he didn't even have to pay taxes on it.

If this guy is still around he's probably on the Internet by now. Seems like the scam artists and porno sites are the ones making the big bucks on the Internet.
