Pacific Telesis has been putting in fiber optic cable for years, starting in the S.F. financial district in the 1960's, and then extending out to South of Market. One of the primary reasons that San Francisco's "Multi-Media Gulch" is where it is at, is because they have ready access to fiber connections...well, that and low rents when the area first started to take off.
