AR, The early morning daq stock trades are happening on off exchange systems. Like instinet. And the daq bid/ask posts you see are good indicators of where the stock will open, although you get some pretty funky bid/ask prices like bid 107 ask 98, because traders are not updating both sides like they would if the market was open.

For some reason I don't quite understand, big board stocks almost never trade off exchange, everyone just waits for the specialist to open 'em up sometime after the bell sounds.
