AMERICA ONLINE (AOL) 82 15/16 -7/16. Market rumors that AOL may be looking to make a major Internet acquisition
enough to warrant a research report on the subject from Hambrecht & Quist. According to the firm, there has been
significant speculation in recent days that AOL will make a high-profile purchase in the Internet space. Companies
that H&Q is hearing are potentially in the cross-hairs include Netscape (NSCP 38 1/2 +1 15/16), Excite (XCIT 51 1/16
-5/16) and @Home (ATHM 52 7/8 +3/4).... H&Q believes any potential deal would have to be "strategically and fiscally
sound." On the strategic front, believes it is clear that AOL would like to improve gross margins. One strategy would be to
increase daytime usage of its services. Currently, AOL's heaviest usage occurs between 10 PM and 1 AM EST. In an attempt to
boost daytime usage, H&Q believes the acquisition of a portal such as Netscape's NetCenter could make sense.
Moreover, believes NetCenter could be profitable operation on a stand-alone basis. Because firm does not believe AOL would
jeopardize positive earnings, does not think company would make a move that would be significantly dilutive, which
immediately excludes cash hemorrhaging cable Internet access company @Home. H&Q also mentions Lycos (LCOS
61 5/16 -11/16) as a possibility, as company is expected to turn profitable in fiscal 2000. H&Q continues to rate AOL a
"strong buy."
