Joan--

Good post: my own take still is that--although the "perp" is probably now feeling repentant, or at least hoping not to get caught--he/she made up the "press release" as a giggle, never imagining that anyone would take it seriously. If he'd really wanted to scam potential investors, he wouldn't have made the CEO's statement so silly. Instead he'd have had him say something like: "It has come to our attention that rumors regarding a Y2K conversion solution developed by DOCU are circulating. The company has no comment at this time". Now THAT would REALLY have done it.

Like you, I'm tired of all this nonsense about "market manipulation". How many false rumors of one kind or another circulate daily about dozens, if not hundreds, of companies? And as far as anyone seems to know, the "press release" appeared only on SI. We may like to think we're influential, but I don't think we're important enough to make the stock trade the way it did that day. Which was rather like the way it traded last Thursday, and Thursday's action had nothing whatsoever to do with the hoax.
