Raisio says McNeil to continue FDA talks

HELSINKI, Nov 20 (Reuters) - Finnish food and chemicals group Raisio
said on Friday that its partner McNeil -- part of Johnson & Johnson
(NYSE:JNJ - news) -- was continuing talks with the Food and Drug
Administration on the U.S. launch of Benecol products.

McNeil and the FDA had met on Thursday but reached no conclusion on
conditions for the marketing of food products with the Raisio-developed
cholesterol-cutting agent Benecol.

''McNeil and FDA are aware of and agree that the principles set in these
talks and the procedures have an important effect also on other
products,'' Raisio said in a statement.

McNeil and the FDA have disagreed over whether Benecol is a dietary
supplement or a food product, which affects the labelling of products.

The dispute has caused a delay in the launch of Benecol foodstuffs,
which McNeil originally planned on releasing in Oregon at the start of
the month.

''There is nothing much to be said, discussions are going on,'' Raisio
spokesman Sten von Hellens told Reuters. ''Things are going forward, and
that's a good thing.''

Von Hellens said McNeil still planned on a U.S. nationwide roll-out of
Benecol in January 1999.
