The incredible 3-headed monster replaces Nussbaum as CTO. Two of these guys have worked up through the organization, while the other guy is new to WDC. Perhaps, investors should give all 3 the benefit of the doubt for awhile.

IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 20, 1998 /PRNewswire/ -- Western Digital Corporation (NYSE: WDC - news) today announced several senior management appointments involving the development and implementation of strategic new business and technology opportunities as well as new R&D leadership of its desktop hard drive business.
Russell Stern, 42, has been named to a new corporate position, Senior Vice President, Strategic Business Development, Marketing and Sales, reporting to Chuck Haggerty, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. Previously, Stern was Senior Vice President, Research and Development, Personal Storage Division (PSD).
In the new position, Stern will drive the company's identification and implementation of strategic new business and technology opportunities, as well as oversee corporate marketing and sales on a worldwide basis. Stern joined Western Digital in 1994 as Vice President, New Product Introduction, before leading WD's Asian manufacturing operations from 1995 to 1997, before returning to the desktop R&D organization in the U.S.
The Company also announced that Dr. Chris Hamlin, 55, has joined Western Digital as Vice President, New Technologies, and Chief Technology Officer. Hamlin brings to WD 17 years of senior research and development experience in computer hardware and software, including nine years at Apple Computer. Most recently, he was vice president and chief technology officer, storage systems at Adaptec. Hamlin will report to Stern and he succeeds Marc Nussbaum, who has resigned to pursue other opportunities. Nussbaum, 42, had served as WD's senior vice president of Advanced Development and Chief Technology Officer and for most of his 18 years with the Company had headed up the Personal Storage engineering organization during its product transitions from chips to boards to hard drives.
Steve Campbell, 44, has been elected an officer of the company and named to succeed Stern as Senior Vice President, Research and Development, PSD, with responsibility for all desktop drive engineering, including WD drives developed under the IBM agreement. Campbell reports to Matt Massengill, Executive Vice President and General Manager, PSD. Campbell joined WD in 1988 after serving Quantum, Honeywell and Hewlett Packard. During his tenure at WD, Campbell has held management positions in development engineering, new product introduction and most recently was head of desktop engineering working on the development of WD drives featuring IBM technology.

Russell Stern:
Russell Stern most recently held the position of senior vice president research and development, Personal Storage Division. Stern was elected an officer of the Company by Western Digital's board of directors in August of 1998. Stern joined Western Digital in 1994 as vice president , new product introduction. He later served as vice president in charge of the Personal Storage Division's Asian operations. Stern has extensive development and marketing experience in the data storage industry, having served at IBM, Ministor, Seagate, Adaptec and Tandon before joining Western Digital.
Dr. Chris Hamlin:
Dr. Hamlin joins Western Digital from his position of vice president and chief technology officer, storage systems at Adaptec. Dr. Hamlin previously held a similar position at Ridge Technologies, a manufacturer of enterprise- class storage systems. Prior to joining Ridge, Dr. Hamlin held the position of chief technology officer and vice president of engineering for DayStar Digital, Inc. Dr. Hamlin also held numerous high-ranking positions in a nine- year tenure at Apple Computer including the position of distinguished engineer, Architecture and Technology Group, manager for handwriting recognition for the Newton Division, and architect and manager for the Wireless Communications Group. Dr. Hamlin also held various senior positions within Apple's Advanced Technology Group and Interactive Electronics Division, including architect and manager for the Interactive TV Group, and advanced storage systems architect, where he designed and developed high performance disk array hardware as well as led Apple's development of IEEE 1394-based product designs and prototypes. Dr. Hamlin has previously taught professional courses for Harvard Laboratory for Computer Graphics, Datamation, and database management for geographic information systems.
Steven Campbell:
Steve Campbell most recently held the position of vice president, desktop engineering, WD drives with IBM technology. Previously, he served as vice president, new product introduction for Western digital responsible for all manufacturing process development and new product transfers to volume manufacturing sites in Asia. Campbell has received three hard drive product design patents during his tenure at Western Digital. Campbell previously held the positions of senior director, product development engineering, director of mechanical development and manager of mechanical development at WD. Campbell also held positions at Quantum Corp., Honeywell Corp., and Hewlett-Packard Corp.
