Very nice post, Joan. It may be simplistic, but my view is that not impeaching Bill Clinton will in the long run do much more harm to the country than the short term "distraction" of an impeachment trial.

If we "allow" such a high profile political figure by using the trappings of his office to "declare war" on an equal branch of government, the judicial branch, then I fear that we have taken a giant leap toward an imperial presidency that our forefathers so diligently labored in thought and deeds to prohibit.

If we really believe that lying under oath is not an impeachable offense because of the "subject matter", sexual harassment, then we should be honest enough to recognize that as a culture we give no real credence to the legal concept of sexual harassment as actionable offense and should change our laws regarding same. We simply cannot have it both ways as a country and expect it not further corrode our notions of justice.
