Jon, Band = frequency band. As in bandwidth. So dual or triple or wide-band or broadband or other band refers to the spectrum being used. Dual band means two different regions of spectrum are used. Wideband means wider areas of spectrum than other comparable systems, so wideband cdma means wider than IS-95, but it is not a very definite term. Broadband means the same as wideband far as I know.

Mode = the method used to make the transmissions. CDMA, analogue, TDMA, GSM [which is a subset of TDMA], PHS [also TDMA], etc.

These are pretty clear meanings, unlike the difference between PCS and Cellular, which has never been clear to me.

"Are you saying it is morally equivalent to deliberately shoot down a known defenseless civilian aircraft and, in a state of heightened military alert, make a mistake in identification and shoot one down?"

Not at all! Where on earth did you get that idea? The Korean 747 was a civilian aircraft - but it was on a military expedition, with civilian passengers, over Russian military bases, in contravention of international flight rules and norms, in defiance of valid Russian military defences, ignoring Russian warnings [there are radio frequencies for communication - these planes are not flying around deaf, dumb and blind]. The intrusion created a state of heightened military alert, the same as when a Russian airliner flew over a high security French base in retaliation. But of course, the French with all the uproar over the 747 couldn't do much about it.

To make a mistake and shoot down the airliner from Iran was pretty dumb you know.

The Russians at least had harsh military justice on their side against a deliberately intrusive enemy defiance. The Vincenne's effort was simple dumb incompetence, but at least they will feel bad about their mistake. The Russian pilots and those who ordered the 747 destruction will probably feel they did their unpleasant duty to defend the motherland and empire. I feel sorry for the passengers of both planes and the poor guys on the Vincennes who for the rest of their lives should feel shame at their mistake when they thought they were doing the right thing. I doubt they will feel bad though, because military people tend to be pretty unconcerned about such minor details. Have those on the Vincennes made personal apologies to the victims' families? I doubt it. Has the USA paid compensation - I thought they had actually, but I'm unsure?

Good riddance to the 747 pilots on the Korean plane!

Have the Koreans or complicitous USA National Security Agency paid compensation to the victims of their misadventure? I doubt it.

I just got an email saying this:

The Russians did not realise KAL007 was civilian. It had definitely not been identified as civilian and the Russians genuinely thought it was military. It wasn't lost. The Americans, in contravention of American law, have never issued an accident report on KAL007. I guess it would be too embarrassing for them.

Anyone seen the accident report?
