Largest Enterprise Database and Breakthrough Bank Profitability
Application Demonstrate Unisys Leadership with Microsoft SQL Server
7.0
November 16, 1998 09:32 AM
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1998-- Unisys 2-terabyte banking
database shows SQL Server 7.0 is ready for the enterprise

Unisys Corp. Monday announced its commitment to Microsoft SQL Server 7.0
as a linchpin in the company's application solutions and services for data
mining and data warehousing, as well as for database-intensive vertical
solutions in financial services and other strategic market sectors.

Demonstrating that commitment, Unisys today debuts an application design
breakthrough: the Customer Behavior and Profitability Application, which
exploits the advanced features, performance and scalability of SQL Server 7.0
to provide retail banks with improved capabilities for business decision making.

The application is designed to help retail banks improve profitability through
targeted marketing of products and services used by their most profitable
customers.

Unisys has used the Data Transformation Services (DTS) facilities of SQL
Server 7.0 in combination with the application to build an integrated, 2-terabyte
database with real banking data. This is the largest commercial database yet
deployed with SQL Server 7.0 in an enterprise-class environment using
Microsoft Windows NT Server.

The 2-terabyte database contains 24 months' worth of banking transactions
based on four million customers with a total of 10 million accounts.

The Customer Behavior and Profitability Application takes full advantage of the
DTS facilities of SQL Server 7.0 to extract gigabytes of data daily regarding
customers' retail banking activities from multiple, heterogeneous systems in the
enterprise - the detailed personal and transactional information required for
meaningful analysis.

The Unisys application also uses OLAP Services, the integrated OnLine
Analytical Processing capability of SQL Server 7.0, for rapid, sophisticated
analysis by applying customer behavior and profitability models against the
analysis database. The simplified administration and querying features of SQL
Server 7.0 also make the application database easy to adjust and maintain.

"Unisys commitment to SQL Server 7.0 as a key database technology extends
our enterprise partnership with Microsoft," said Lawrence A. Weinbach, Unisys
chairman and chief executive officer.

"Unisys services leadership and expertise in mission-critical systems for
enterprise computing provide a foundation to deploy SQL Server 7.0-based
solutions that address customers' most demanding business computing needs
and help them better serve their own customers."

"Unisys banking application and the two-terabyte database demonstrate the
enterprise readiness of SQL Server 7.0," said Charles Stevens, Vice President,
Microsoft Application Developers Customer Unit.

"Unisys expertise in delivering comprehensive systems and services in key
enterprise markets like financial services, combined with powerful Microsoft
platform technology, expands the range of scalable, powerful and cost-effective
solutions Unisys can deliver to its customers."

The Unisys Customer Behavior and Profitability Application represents a
distinct advantage over similar applications, which typically are based on group
demographics.

The Unisys application captures data representing individual customer behavior:
products owned, balances kept, fees paid and transactions enacted through
multiple channels, such as withdrawals at teller stations, ATM transfers, call
center activities and other significant information.

It also simplifies the process of data storage and quality verification, profitability
calculation, unit cost analysis and other data warehousing and data mining
activities.

By incorporating Microsoft technology, the Unisys solution provides customers
with an unprecedented combination of economy, scalability and advanced
functionality. Banks can take advantage of the Windows NT operating system's
lower cost of ownership while capitalizing on the SQL Server 7.0 environment to
support enterprise-class applications.

The 2-terabyte SQL Server 7.0 database created through the Customer
Behavior and Profitability Application is available for demonstration over the
World Wide Web at www.unisys.com/sql7/dbp.

SQL Server 7.0 anchors additional Unisys services, solutions, systems

SQL Server 7.0 will play a key role in a range of other Unisys services and
solutions for multiple markets.

Unisys today also announced formation of the Database Solutions Practice, an
information services organization committed to designing and developing large
database solutions based on SQL Server 7.0 to address the strategic business
requirements of financial services customers. The practice will initially
concentrate on servicing customers in North America, with plans for worldwide
expansion.

The consultants in the Unisys Database Solutions Practice will advise clients
on database design and re-engineering, data warehousing, decision support
services, OLAP and knowledge management.

Using Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 as its lead database, the practice will develop
solutions to help customers with strategic business requirements, such as
improving decision or management processes and customer service, attracting
and retaining customers and developing corporate strategy.

Throughout 1999, Unisys will make support for SQL Server 7.0 an integral
feature of a variety of solutions, including FBA Navigator, a customer service
and sales solution for retail banking that provides a common view of the
customer across multiple channels; Unisys document management solutions,
based on imaging and related technologies and applicable across a range of
markets, from financial services to transportation; and public sector solutions.

Unisys will also support SQL Server 7.0 on its full line of enterprise servers for
the Windows NT Server 4.0 and forthcoming Windows 2000 environments.

The Unisys systems, based on advanced Intel microprocessor technologies,
including Pentium II Xeon and, in the future, Merced, have already set
benchmark records using SQL Server 7.0 in SAP applications and in the
industry-standard Transaction Processing Council TPC-C benchmark tests.

Created by a world-class development team, Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 is the
leading Windows NT Server-based database, bringing business advantage and
improved decision-making to all levels of the organization through the power of
data warehousing, industry solutions and interoperability with Microsoft Office.

Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 enables independent software vendors and customers
to build and deploy scalable database solutions for e-commerce, line of
business, mobile computing and data warehousing. Microsoft SQL Server is a
member of the Microsoft BackOffice family, a set of servers that make it easy
to build, manage and deploy powerful business solutions.

Unisys UIS is more than 33,000 employees helping customers in 100 countries
apply information technology to solve their business problems.

Unisys solutions are based on a broad portfolio of global information services
including systems integration, outsourcing, "repeatable" application solutions,
consulting, network integration, remote network management, and multivendor
maintenance and support, coupled with enterprise-class servers and associated
middleware, software and storage. Repeatable solutions are focused on key
vertical markets including financial services, transportation,
telecommunications, government, publishing and other commercial markets.
