[ASND's IP switch:]
Could you or someone else help me understand Ascend's GRF 400 switch? We've heard alot about bottlenecks on the backbone and it seems to me this might help alleviate the problem. What are these "private network access points" they're talking about?
I'm in the dark on this one.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Regards,
Pat

( BW)(ASCEND-COMMUNICATIONS)(ASND) Savvis Communications Selects Ascend's GRF 400 for Nationwide ATM Network; Savvis Deploys State-of-the-Art Network Using IP Switches that Promise "No Bottlenecks" to Corporate Customers
Business Editors
ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 1997--Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND) today announced a multimillion dollar agreement with St. Louis-based Savvis Communications, formerly Diamond.Net, for Ascend's GRF 400 high performance IP switch. Savvis will utilize the Ascend GRF 400 throughout its coast-to-coast asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)-based backbone network, with plans to install the high performance switch/routers in five private network access points (PNAPs) nationwide by the end of the second quarter of 1997, with an additional 13 PNAPs planned by the year's end. Savvis differentiates itself from other high-capacity backbone operators by utilizing a state-of-the-art managed private ATM network that bypasses the public metropolitan area exchanges (MAEs) and network access points (NAPs) that cause massive bottlenecks on the public Internet. Through its nationwide PNAPs, Savvis will use the GRF to offer reliable, high-speed Internet and Intranet services over a privately managed, high performance network. "Ascend's GRF 400 matched our requirements precisely. With its high-aggregate packet-forwarding rates and support for multiple-media types, the GRF 400 is well-suited to Savvis' managed private ATM network for high-speed Internet and Intranet business communications," said Gary Zimmerman, vice president, network engineering at Savvis Communications. "We are extremely pleased to see the GRF 400 applied to exactly the kind of traffic-intensive, multimedia backbone network for which it was designed," said Mark Garver, vice president and general manager of Ascend's High Performance Network Division. "Savvis is providing the type of uncompromised service that the corporate marketplace demands, and Ascend is proud to be part of that vision." The GRF 400 is a high performance IP switch designed to address the increasing problem of congestion on the Internet backbone. The GRF 400 is the only IP switch on the market to combine a high-performance switching architecture with true layer-3 routing, enabling it to handle complex topologies at unprecedented speeds -- up to 2.8 million packets per second -- an ability missing from current backbone solutions.
