I disagree. I think it would represent no setback for Java whatever. Substitute JVM's would appear immediately. I doubt Microsoft will have the balls to do it anyway because they dislike giving up control of any part of their system. But I wish they would.

As for IE, as a longtime user of MS systems, and a user of Netscape Navigator since the day it came out and of Mosaic before that, I don't have any trouble figuring out Microsoft's claim that the integration of IE with Win98 "benefits customers". It's no benefit to me to have IE pop up as the browser every time you click on a link in a mail message even though I don't want it to (can someone tell me how to change that? Netscape is theoretically my default browser). It's no benefit to me to have 2 browsers on my system without being able to remove one of them. It is certainly no benefit to me to have default Windows Explorer behavior show my disk directories in the confusing, wasteful and absurd "View As Web Pages" mode until I tell it to do otherwise.

Besides turning out bloated, buggy, confusing and unmanageable products, Microsoft is a liar.
