WASHINGTON -- Soros Fund Management LLC's portfolio of about 136 stocks was valued at $3.9 billion at the end of the third quarter on Sept. 30, compared with 247 stocks worth $8.02 billion at June 30, the end of the second quarter.
A Thursday Federal Filings Business News report said Soros purchased 1,495,800 shares of Southern New England Telecommunications, a unit of SBC Communications Inc. (SBC), valued at $116.6 million and 8.4 million Globalstar Telecommunications Ltd. (GSTRF) shares valued at $94.1 million.
The hedge-fund group bought 1,005,000 shares of H.F. Ahmanson & Co., a unit of Washington Mutual Inc. (WAMU), valued at $55.8 million and 1,819,500 Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) shares with a market value of $33.8 million.
Soros's other significant new positions were 1.5 million CompUSA Inc. (CPU) shares valued at $26 million; 600,000 Union Pacific Corp. (UNP) share worth $25.6 million; 410,000 Suntrust Banks Inc. (STI) shares valued at $25.4 million; 320,000 Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) shares worth $25.1 million; 485,000 Schlumberger Ltd. (SLB) shares worth $24.4 million; 285,000 Wachovia Corp. (WB) shares worth $24.3 million; 430,000 Mellon Bank Corp. (MEL) shares worth $23.7 million; and 400,000 Class B Viacom Inc. (VIAB) shares worth $23.2 million.
