Dave- what is the techno-scoop on powerline transmissions?

I'm just a physikist, so 'scuse me.

Seems obvious to me you can't run ethernet communications at the bandwidth needed on the powerlines because the wires just ain't signal grade, plain and simple. Otherwise we would run ethernet on cheap radio shack speaker cables.

I had assumed that the game was to sign up power companies, then use the communications grade copper (or fiber) that the power companies run paralell to the high voltage to troubleshoot their grid. If it wasn't that, then I figured the game was to buy the right-of-way on the poles, and string fiber above ground, next to the high joltage.

In short, I had assumed the whole point of the powerline strategy was a business ploy- to abandon the powerline copper ASAP- the technology to do so being a red herring to dodge regs and competetors for a first round.

Anyone?
