Voltaire -
A great post, I have tucked it away for future reference. I also like AOL although am not currently holding it. I am pretty much fully invested at the moment - unloaded 1/2 my SAP in mid-october and bought SCI - already a double. Thanks to a friendly tip from another poster on this thread, I unloaded the other half of SAP and bought into PSQL earlier this month, already up about 20% on that one. I'm not really holding anything I don't like, so I'll probably just ease into AOL over the next few months as odds and ends turn up for me financially.

I thought your statement about your investing philosophy was clear and remarkably straightforward, and my own experience bears out the merit of your arguments, although I could not have stated it as nicely. The mainstays of my portfolio are stocks I have held for many years (including 4 of your 7), and I have been 'bored' by a return of better than 100% overall annually for at least the last three years. Nothing fancy in my technique - just buy and hold, and don't play with more than 20% of my holdings. I only shift the 'keepers' very slowly, maybe an adjustment every 6 months, and that only a portion of any holding.

But why wouldn't someone somewhere do that for small investors - there must be lots of folks who would love to do better than the mutual funds? Surely there's an opportunity there.
