Charles, thanks for correcting my typo leading to 20 million too few Kurds. I meant 22.5 million, not 2.5 million. And you do a good job pointing out the factors which fragment Kurd politics--I didn't mean to imply that there was a great unified Kurdish conspiracy at present, and I agree about tribal conflicts. But I'm unaware of any major Kurdish group that doesn't want an independent Kurdistan state, though it's possible someone may have said so under one form of compulsion or another, or as a temporary bargaining strategy. It's this stubborn, more or less patient intent on having a Kurdish state that somewaht unifies Kurds, and has done so for a very long time.

20% of the population is a huge bunch to put in some sort of concentration camp. I can understand why nobody wants to cede part of their present territory to help establish another nation, but that's probably the best solution. Politically, however, I think the only way that will happen is if there is another huge war fought all over the area which leads to significant changes of boundaries in general. And war is never the best solution. I'm sure the UN would be open to brilliant, creative ideas that appeal to all sides, if you want to work on it. Might even lead to a Nobel prize.
